VMware vSphere 5.x

Secondo quando descritto dalla KB 2006859 (Windows 8 / Windows Server 2012 Operating System does not boot or install on ESXi or ESX) i sistemi operativi Windows 8 e Windows Server 2012 sono perfettamente supportati, in VM eseguite su ESXi 5.1, ESXi 5.1 U1,  ESXi 5.0 U1 e ESXi 5.0 U2.

Note: Per Windows Server 2012, è necessaria la patch ESXi500-201209001(Patch 04) su ESXi 5.0 U1. Per maggiori informazioni vedere la KB VMware ESXi 5.0, Patch Release ESXi500-201209001 (2032584).

Anche Hyper-V può essere eseguito in una VM. In questo caso basta fare riferimento a come abilitare un nested hypervisor su vSphere 5.1 (di fatto si tratta di scegliere un’opzione dal Web Client).

Con gli ultimi rilasci di patch, a partire da vSphere 5.1U1 vCenter Server può essere installato su Windows Server 2012 (per maggiori informazioni vedere questo video), come pure è stata aggiunta la corretta customizzazione (tramite vCenter Server) di entrambi i sistemi operativi.

Notare che con Windows 8 vi possono essere alcuni problemi di compatibilità con il VMware vSphere Client (soprattutto per le versioni precedenti)… Una ragione in più per decidersi a migrare al nuovo vSphere Web Client.

VMware vSphere 4.x

Ufficialmente Windows 8 o Windows Server 2012 non sono supportati su ESXi/ESX 4.0 o 4.1.

In realtà è possibile, come spiegato in questo community thread e in questo post, eseguirli in VM su vSphere 4.1 tramite questo trucco:

  • Create a  new VM over the vSphere Client.
  • As “Guest Operating System” use “Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)”
  • If you finished the creation of the VM download the follwing bios file and upload it to your ESXi datastore
  • Move the bios file to the folder of the new VM
  • Now open the .vmx file of the new VM and add the follwing lines
    • bios440.filename = “bios.440.rom”
    • mce.enable = TRUE
    • cpuid.hypervisor.v0 = FALSE
    • vmGenCounter.enable = FALSE
  • Run the VM and install Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012

Per quanto rigurarda il vSphere Client su Windows 8, come già detto vi sono alcuni problemi di compatibilità, ma seguendo il trucco spiegato in questo post (di fatto, selezionando la compatibility mode su Windows 7) è possibile eseguirlo.
