Di recente, durante il VMworld US 2018, VMware ha celebrato i suoi 20 anni di storia che hanno segnato una rivoluzione nel mondo dell’IT, grazie alla virtualizzazione per ambienti x86.

Ma in realtà esiste un’altra soluzione di virtualizzazione su x86 che anch’essa ha tanta storia e che questo mese compie i suoi 15 anni: Xen Project, con il supporto a guest Linux 2.4.22.

Nel lontano ottobre 2003, Ian Pratt (il fondatore del Xen Project) annuncia la prima release stabile del Xen virtual machine monitor per x86!

“Xen started life at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory, as part of the XenoServers research project to build a public computing infrastructure on the Internet. It’s been fantastic to see the impact of Xen, and the role it’s played at the heart of what we now call Infrastructure as a Service Cloud Computing. It’s been an incredible journey from Xen’s early beginnings in the University, to making our first open source release in 2003, to building a strong community of contributors around the project, and then Xen’s growth beyond server virtualization into end-user systems and now embedded devices. Xen is a great example of the power of open source to enable cooperation and drive technological progress.

Uno dei pregi di è la sua natura modulare e flessibile oltre che OpenSource, rendendolo versatile anche per altri utilizzi. Per esempio nel nel 2008, Samsung rilascia Secure Xen on ARM, dimostrando come possa essere facilmente utilizzato anche su piattaforme alternative.

Sicuramente è stato uno dei più popolari hypervisor OpenSource e si stimano più di 10 milioni di utenti. Ma con l’inevitabile crescita di KVM, le cose stanno cambiando, considerando che Amazon AWS ha annunciato di passare da Xen a KVM.

Ma questo non vuol dire che il progetto è morto. Forse non versa in buone acque la versione commerciale XenServer (nel 2007 Citrix acquisisce XenServer per 500 milioni di dollari), ma il progetto Xen rimane vitale e sta trovando nuove strade e impieghi, ad esempio come sistema principale di virtualizzazione nell’ambito automotive.
