Reading Time: 5 minutesRecent VMware security bug (VMSA-2017-0006) is related to one of the worst possible security issue in a virtualization environment: a possible “guest escape” vulnerability that allows arbitrary code execution on a host system from the guest system. It’s not the first time of a similar risk (see, for example, Microsoft Edge used to escape VMware Workstation at Pwn2Own 2017) but this kind of issue is a different risk level if it affect Worksation (so “just” a client environment) or a ESXi (potentially a datacenter environment).

Add deduplication and compression to an Linux server

Reading Time: 2 minutesAlthough Linux is used in several storage solutions, the native filesystems lack of modern features like deduplication or compression (compression extented attribute is present from some decade, but it’s implementions is still limited or missing). Most storage solutions use other filesystem (like ZFS), or also other operating systems: FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenSolaris branches, or also Windows Server (like DataCore). Now Permabit Technology Corporation announced the availability of its Albireo Virtual Data Optimizer (VDO) for Canonical’s Ubuntu Server.
