Reading Time: 4 minutesWith the introduction of Postgre SQL as the “embbeded” database in Veeam Backup & Replication 12, several new deployments now use the default database in the same machine of Veeam Backup Server. I don’t want to consider in this post all the pros and cons of the embedded approach. But it’s fully supported and can can also to an interesting number of protected workload (tested with more than 1000).

Reading Time: 5 minutesAs descrived in the previous post (Optimize the consumed space of the Veeam Backup Catalog) the Veeam Backup Catalog is a feature of Veeam Backup & Replication that stands for VM guest OS file indexing. It’s not a server role, but it’s a service of the Veeam Server, for this reason required space must be planned carefully. By default, the indexing data is stored in the VBRCatalog folder (C:\VBRCatalog) on the Backup Server.

Reading Time: 2 minutesVeeam Backup Catalog is a feature of Veeam Backup & Replication that stands for VM guest OS file indexing. Veeam Backup Catalog comprises Veeam Guest Catalog services that run on a backup server and Enterprise Manager server. Veeam Guest Catalog service on backup server works as a local catalog service. It collects index data for backup jobs on this specific backup server and stores this data locally in the Veeam Backup Catalog folder. By default, the indexing data is stored in the VBRCatalog folder on the backup server. Veeam Backup & Replication creates the folder on a volume with the maximum amount […]

Reading Time: 2 minutesOne of the interesting new features of Veeam Backup & Replication is the introduction of YARA (Yet Another Recursive Acronym) rules to scan the VM guest files. As explained in this great blog post, YARA is one of the most effective ways to help identify and classify malware like ransomware. YARA is an open sourced resource that enables cybersecurity teams to search for, detect and alert you to the presence of malware before it can do any damage.

Reading Time: 3 minutesThe release version of Veeam Backup & Replication 12.1 is available for download at veeam.com/backupreplication-download.html starting from December 5, 2023. For more information see the release notes document. It adds some improvements, some new features and some updates in the software compatibility matrix.

Reading Time: 3 minutesVeeam announced two new offerings which combine the confidence and reliability of Veeam’s backup and restore capabilities with the ease-of-use of Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS). The news is that those two offers are not delivered through cloud partners, but directly as a Veeam’s portfolio service called Cirrus by Veeam. Cirrus by Veeam was acquired from CT4, an Australian company who developed the cloud-native service utilizing Veeam’s industry-leading data backup and ransomware recovery platform.

Reading Time: 4 minutesVeeam Continuous data protection (CDP) is a technology that helps you protect mission-critical VMware virtual machines when data loss for seconds or minutes is unacceptable. CDP also provides minimum recovery time objective (RTO) in case a disaster strikes because CDP replicas are in a ready-to-start state. First, CDP creates replicas and, then, keeps these replicas up to date. CDP constantly replicates I/O operations performed on VMs. To read and process I/O operations in transit between the protected VMs and their underlying datastore, CDP uses vSphere APIs for I/O filtering (VAIO) that gives an option not […]
