Citrix acquisisce Unidesk

Nell’ottima di semplificare la distribuzione e la gestione delle applicazioni tramite XenApp e XenDesktop, Citrix ha annunciato l’acquisizione di Unidesk, una delle aziende leader nella tecnologia di packaging, management e layering delle applicazioni Windows.

La tecnologia di layering di Unidesk permette di separare in modo semplice (tramite virtual disk) la parte di sistema operativo Windows (OS layer), dalla parte delle applicazioni (app layers) e dalla parte dei dati e dei settings degli utenti.

Purple screen of the death are the “blue” screen of VMware ESXi when something really wrong happen, usually at hardware level. They are not so common, unless you stay in the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) and have reliable hardware.

One strange issue that I’ve got recently was on HP server with ESXi 6.0 with this kind of purple screen:

Now that the new VMware vSphere 6.5 is in GA, most people are starting considering to upgrade (or start from scratch) with this version, instead of vSphere 6.0 (or also 5.5).

But please consider this product like a major release, there are several changes, but also new features and scalability properties that make interesting for each new environment, but also for existing customers (with an active subscription if you have a 5.5 version, so that you can also upgrade your 5.x license keys).

But like each new version you have to make some consideration first and especially before starting the upgrade procedure, so be sure to start from the vSphere Upgrade Center, the VMware Product Interoperability Matrix, the VMware Compatibility Guide, but also read the following notes.

Nutanix ha annunciato la nuova lista dei Nutanix Tech Champions (NTC) 2017.

Il programma NTC simile ad altri community award come VMware vExpert, Microsoft MVP, Cisco Champions, EMC Elect, … che premia chi, all’interno delle diverse community, si prodiga a condividere la propria conoscenza ed esperienza.

The Nutanix Technology Champion program spans the globe and is comprised of IT professionals from every cloud, application group, and technology. They are committed to news ways of thinking that will power the next generation of enterprise computing.

Quest’anno, a seguito dell’acquisizione da parte di Nutanix di PernixData, questa lista include anche persone provenienti dal programma PernixPro (che purtroppo è stato chiuso).

Il ruolo dell’OpenSource nel cloud

Che il mondo OpenSource sia importante nessuno lo mette in dubbio: ci sono aziende che ne hanno fatto un motto e un modello di business (RedHat in primis), ma ci sono aziende che lo stanno abbracciando vedendolo più come una risorsa più che un nemico (vedasi Microsoft nell’ultimo anno).

In realtà bisognerebbe fare un distinguo tra software OpenSource e software libero (Free Software) che però richiederebbe post dedicati (rimando a questa pagina sul sito del progetto GNU). La verità è che a parte i concetti (assolutamente importanti e fondamentali), da un punto di vista del business (che poi è quello che interessa alle aziende) le differenze potrebbero essere non così rilevanti. Per questo motivo nel resto del post i due termini saranno trattati come “sinomi” (benché non lo siano).

Veeam Agent è il nuovo nome del “vecchio” Endpoint, nell’otticca di integrare queste componenti nella gestone di Veeam Backup in ottica non solo più virtuale, ma anche fisica, come annunciato nell’evento virtual di agosto.

Ora dopo diverse beta (l’ultima era di Settembre) il primo agente ufficiale vede la luce con la disponibilità in GA di Veeam Agent for Linux 1.0!
