VMUG.IT – Secondo evento ufficiale

Si è svolto il secondo evento del VMUG italiano, che ha replichicato e superato il successo del primo evento (più di 160 iscritti e pare circa 120 partecipanti). Il formato è stato molto simile a quello già apprezzato nel primo evento con numerosi interventi al mattino, incentrati in modo particolare su vSphere 5, ed una interessantissima tavola rotonda pomeridiana sulle soluzioni di backup per VMware.

Un grazie a tutti i partecipanti, gli organizzatori e gli sponsor per la riuscita dell’evento. Nei prossimi giorni saranno pubblicate le slide delle sessioni.

Durante tutta la giornata, saranno presenti nella hall vari vendor presso i quali porre questioni commerciali e tecniche: Acronis, EMC, Quest, Splunk, Symantec, Veeam. A fine giornata è stata anche annunciata una nuova iniziativa del VMUG.IT: VMUG.IT Hands-On Day.

VMworld Europe 2011 – Suggerimenti per chi partecipa

Per chi parteciperà al VMworld Europe 2011 (e magari per prima volta) vi sono numerosi suggerimenti (in inglese):

Le priorità dovrebbero essere:

  • Networking
  • Sessioni e hands-on labs
  • Vendor booths (troverete molti gadget e possibili premi :D )

Le mie note personali:

  • Per i blogger: usare l’hashtag  #VMworld con Twitter (ma poi ogni sessione avrà anche il suo hashtag)
  • Dove dormire… vicino al centro o vicino al Bella Center?
    Personalmente preferisco vicino al centro per varie ragioni… la zona del Bella Center è desolata… i party si svolgono in città… e un giro in centro a mangiare e/o bere una birra non è neppure da scartare
  • L’anno scorso, alla registrazione veniva consegnato anche un comodo abbonamento di 3 gg per i mezzi pubblici… non male visto nell’ottica di avere l’albergo in centro…
    e si può persino risparmiare il primo viaggio dall’aeroporto, visto che l’anno scorso vi era un servizio di bus-navetta gratuito (speriamo ci sia anche quest’anno)
  • Dato che è impossibile vedere tutte le sessioni e soprattutto dato che saranno poi rese tutte disponibili, conviene concentrarsi su quelli che interessano e dosare il tempo anche per altre attività…
  • Ad esempio per gli Hands-on Labs che sono notevoli e che sono disponibili solo durante il periodo del VMworld (anche se la traccia sarà poi comunque resa disponibile)
  • Molti criticano il servizio di Wi-Fi ed in particolare la stabilità della connessione… Ad essere onesto io l’anno scorso non ho avuto problemi… alla peggio ci si può spostare per care un’area meno affollata
  • Le valigie vanno pianificate tenendo in considerazione che si tornerà con più roba (soprattutto gadget, ma perché no… magari anche qualche premio)
  • Ci dovrebbe essere (l’anno scorso c’era) uno zaino che vi viene consegnato alla registrazione… considerate quindi anche questo
  • L’abbigliamento è casual. Cercate il comfort… anche se non c’è tantissimo da camminare. Piuttosto ricordarsi che a fine ottobre a Copenhagen potrebbe fare freddo.
  • Tenere sempre acqua a portata di mano?! Diciamo che non siamo a Las Vegas e che forse non farà neppure caldo… però fa sempre comodo
  • Non dimenticarsi gli alimentatori per telefoni, tablet, o altro… per fortuna la presa elettrica è compatibile con quella italiana
  • Ci sono vari concorsi con (ricchi) premi in palio… qualcuno li deve pur vincere… quindi perché non provarci?!
    per la cronaca… non ho mai vinto nulla a questi eventi
  • Oltre al party ufficiale di mercoledì sera, vi sono vari party organizzati dai vendor… ma lunedì sera c’è anche il VMUG Party 2011:

Perché partecipare all’evento VMworld Europe 2011

Mancano solo 2 settimane al VMworld Europe 2011, che rappresenta una ghiotta opportunità per rimanere aggiornati sul mondo della virtualizzazione e sui prodotti e soluzioni di VMware. C’è ancora tempo per iscriversi (e si possono ancora trovare codici promozionali da alcuni vendor).

A parte le sessioni di formazione e informazione (ve ne sono di tutti i tipi e comunque, agli iscritti del VMworld, sono poi consultabili anche via web), due validi motivi che vedo (e che si possono applicare anche ad altri eventi del settore) sono:

  • Hands-on Labs: la possibilità di fare pratica, provare gli ultimi prodotti o quelli che usciranno a breve è sicuramente stimolante.
  • Network: inteso come conoscere o incontrare persone persone del settore.

Chiaramente vi possono essere anche delle valide ragioni per non andare:

  • L’evento è troppo vicino ad VMworld americano e quindi chi è già stato lì, non ha motivi di andare.
  • Potrebbero non esserci molti annunci di nuovi prodotti (visto che i principali sono già stati annunciati e/o rilasciati), ma vi saranno comunque importanti annunci su strategie e prodotti futuri.
  • Copenhagen è abbastanza costosa, e quindi il viaggio andrebbe pianificato in tempo, ma si dovrebbero ancora trovare alberghi a buon prezzo e forse anche voli economici.

Da ricordare, inoltre, che un biglietto omaggio al VMworld Europe sarà sorteggia durante il secondo evento ufficiale del VMUG :)

Novità in vSphere 5 – VMware HA advanced options

Con la nuova versione di VMware HA, le advanced options sono cambiate: alcune opzioni sono nuove, altre sono state rimosse e non funzionano più con vSphere 5. Per l’elenco completo vedere Supported vSphere 5.0 Advanced Options.

Una delle opzioni che non è più disponibile è “das.failuredetectiontime” (tipicamente utilizzata quando si aggiungevano ulteriori isolation address). Il motivo di questo cambiamento è legato alla nuova funzione di test attraverso lo storage ed è spiegato bene da Duncan Epping nel suo HA Deep Dive:

I know many of you used this advanced setting to tweak when the host would trigger the isolation response, that is no longer possible and needed to be honest. If you’ve closely read my other articles you hopefully picked up on the datastore heartbeating part already which is one reason for not needing this anymore. The other reason is that before the isolation response is triggered the host will actually validate if virtual machines can be restarted and if it isn’t an all out network outage. Most of us have been there at some point, a network admin decides to upgrade the switches and all hosts trigger the isolation response at the same time… well that won’t happen anymore!

VCP5 Exam Prep – Part 6.4

Objective 6.4 – Perform Basic Troubleshooting for HA/DRS Clusters and vMotion/Storage vMotion

Identify HA/DRS and vMotion requirements (similar as vSphere 4.x)

Vedere la vSphere Availability guide (pag. 11) and the vSphere Resource Management guide (page 51). Un requisito comunque è lo storage condiviso, ma sono anche richieste particolari configurazioni di rete e (per DRS e vMotion) anche la compatibility delle CPU o almeno la funzione EVC abilitata nel cluster.

Verify vMotion/Storage vMotion configuration (similar as vSphere 4.x)

Vedere la vCenter Server and Host Management guide (pag. 119 e 122). Per la rete richiesta dal vMotion serve, per ogni host, almeno un’inferfaccia vmkernel abilitata (da notare che con vSphere 5 è possibile usarne più di una). Per lo Storage vMotion il requisito principale è che l’host possa vedere entrambi gli storage (di sorgente e destinazione).

Verify HA network configuration (new in vSphere 5)

Vedere la vSphere Availability guide (pag. 13). L’heartbeat può transitare sia delle interfacce vmkernel di management (o altre specificate dagli advanced settings)… oppure anche tramite un test sullo storage condiviso.

Verify HA/DRS cluster configuration (similar as vSphere 4.x)

Vedere la vSphere Availability guide (pag. 11) e la vSphere Resource Management guide (pag. 51). Da notare che sono disponibili alcune nuove finestre con dettagli sullo stato di HA e DRS.

Troubleshoot HA capacity issues (similar as vSphere 4.x)

Vedere la vSphere Troubleshooting guide (pag. 31). Bisogna capire le diverse modalità di admission control e come le risorse vengono “riservate” per l’HA.

Troubleshoot HA redundancy issues (same as vSphere 4.x)

Vedere la vSphere Availability guide (pag. 11).

Interpret the DRS Resource Distribution Graph and Target/Current Host Load Deviation (same as vSphere 4.x)

Vedere VMware DRS Resource Distribution Chart.

Troubleshoot DRS load imbalance issues (similar as vSphere 4.x)

Vedere la vSphere Resource Management guide (pag. 62).

Troubleshoot vMotion/Storage vMotion migration issues (similar as vSphere 4.x)

Vedere la vCenter Server and Host Management guide (pag. 119 e 122). Verificare anche la compatibilità con le eventuali snaphost di VMware.

Interpret vMotion Resource Maps (similar as vSphere 4.x)

Le mappe sono un modo semplice di verificare i collegamenti di storage e rete tra host e/o VM.

Identify the root cause of a DRS/HA cluster or migration issue based on troubleshooting information (similar as vSphere 4.x)

Rivedere tutti i punti precenti e Perform Basic Troubleshooting for HA/DRS (è per vSphere 4.x ma è comunque valido). Per l’HA failover vedere anche la vSphere Troubleshooting guide (pag. 34).
