Reading Time: 2 minutesAfter some month from the previous release (see the announce of the v3.0), NAKIVO Inc. has announced (on 15 July 2013) the new release NAKIVO Backup & Replication v3.2 that introduce some new features and several optiminization to the existing core features of v3.0. The product remain still based on a web 2.0 (here some screenshoots) almost clear and usable also from small device. But it’s not (yet) integrable with the VMware vSphere Web Client (a web based interface does not directly mean that could be integrated with the vSphere Web Client, that it’s based […]

Reading Time: < 1 minuteRecenltly I’ve got some issue with Storage vMotion due to the “lock” function used by some backup programs. I’ve write about it related with Symantec Backup Exec, but this time was with VMware Data Protector (VDP). Usually, backup programs disable Storage vMotion during the backup process to avoid datastore changes (and issue during the copy, considering that starting from vSphere 5.0 it’s possible use Storage vMotion also on VM with snapshots). But if the backup process fail, some backup programs does not clear this information correctly.

Reading Time: 4 minutesThe current version of Symantec Backup Exec is still not supported with VMware vSphere 5.1, according with the Software Compatibility List (SCL). The full support will be available with the 2012 R2 release and/or with the 2012 SP2 (seems confirmed according with this post, but no official date has been announced yet). The missing support does not mean that does not work, but it’s quite boring because you have a lot of minor issues, some not easy to understand.

Reading Time: 3 minutesIn the previous weeks Veeam has announced seven of the new features of Veeam Backup & Replication 7, by giving more application-aware functions and also a complete multi-tier backup solution (from the storage snapshots, to disk storage as a main level, to tape and/or cloud as the last or remote level). Note that tape support is more completed that was rumored inlcuding library support and more media rotation policies (included Grandfather Father Son). Today there are two new interesting announcement of new features:

Reading Time: 4 minutesNAKIVO Inc. has announced (on 25 march 2013) that it has released NAKIVO Backup & Replication v3.0 with support for file recovery from local and cloud based VM backups, single click integration with Amazon cloud, and advanced reporting. Downloading an entire backup from the cloud to recover just a few critical files can consume an unacceptable amount of time. However, with NAKIVO Backup & Replication v3.0, files can be instantly accessed and restored from any VM backup, regardless whether it’s a few feet or few thousand miles away, enabling rapid operational recovery from anywhere, including […]

Reading Time: 6 minutesPHD Virtual has released the new PHD Virtual Backup 6.2 with a cloud feature called Cloud Hook that permit to save the backup also on some public cloud provider (like Amazon S3, Rackspace CloudFiles, Google Cloud Storage, or any local provider that supports OpenStack/Swift cloud storage). The product is still available both for VMware vSphere and also for Citrix XenServer (and probably is the main professional backup solution for this hypervisor). I’ve tested the product beta for VMware (on vSphere 5.1) to verify the cloud features.
