Veeam Backup and Replication offers different type of primary storage integration to improve and offload the backup process using storage snapshots (and limiting VMware snapshots only for the time needed to take a storage snapshot).

If you have a free agent or simply a standalone agent you must manage it directly, including manage its lifecycle. But it remain very easy like in the past (see for example Upgrade to Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows 2.2 ), by using directly the Veeam Agent console, where you can check if a new version is available and start the download and upgrade process.
