Extreme Networks is going to acquire Brocade’s assets

Just some months ago Broadcom has announced a definitive agreement under which it will acquire Brocade merging networking with storage competency to build stronger company. Due to competitive overlaps, Broadcom plans to divest the IP Networking business. Brocade’s intention was to assist Broadcom in finding a buyer that will continue to invest in the strong portfolio that Brocade created.

Now Broadcom and Extreme announced that they have reached a definitive agreement for the purchase of Brocade’s Switching, Routing & Analytics (SRA) business unit, including the VDX, MLX, SLX platform family, Brocade Workflow Composer, and Network Visibility & Analytics product and service portfolios, following the closing of Broadcom’s acquisition of Brocade. We believe that Extreme is a great fit for our SRA business and represents a positive outcome for our partners and customers.

Alcuni chiarimenti sul futuro di PernixData FVP

Qualche mese fa avevo scritto un post su possibili alternative a PernixData FVP dato che da agosto 2016 Nutanix ha acquisito PernixData, ma senza dare chiare indicazioni sul futuro dei prodotti FVP e Architectect. Anzi dando persino l’impressione che il prodotto venisse dismesso, come del resto hanno dismesso subito il programma community PernixPro. Neppure l’ultimo .NEXT a Vienna ha chiarito questa situazione lasciando quindi molte ombre e dubbi sui prodotti Pernix.

Finalmente, di recente, sono riuscito a parlare con persone di Nutanix che seguono questi prodotti e mi hanno chiarito molti dubbi.

RedHat è molto nota per le sue distribuzioni e per il suo impegno nel mondo OpenStack (e più in generale nel mondo OpenSource), ma è anche molto attiva nel mondo della virtualizzazione e dello storage software defined. In particolare nell’area SDS esistono due linee di prodotto completamente differenti:

  • RedHat Gluster Storage (in precedenza noto semplicemente come Red Hat Storage Server) fornisce una soluzione di file based storage.
  • RedHat Chef Storage fornisce una soluzione di block e object storage.

VMware vSphere Client issues with console and Windows 10

If you are using the legacy VMware vSphere Client on Windows 10 you may have some issues with the VM console that display only a part of the screen and leave blank other parts.

You can use other clients (like the Web Client if you have vCenter or the Host UI if you have at least ESXi 6.0U2), but maybe you will have other issues (for example on ESXi 6.0 host UI console mouse may not work well or not at all).

Problemi con ReFS e cluster a 4KB

Resilient File System (ReFS) è il nuovo filesystem Microsoft introdotto (al pubblico) per la prima volta in Windows Server 2012, con l’intendo di diventare il sostituto del vecchio NTFS (consideriamo che la prima versione di NTFS risale a Windows NT 3.1!).

Per certi versi è un po’ come lo ZFS del mondo Windows, ma inizialmente non era consigliato sia per le limitazioni rispetto ad NTFS, sia per la sua giovane età.

A partire da Windows Server 2016, ReFS inizia a diventare il filesystem consigliato per alcuni workload (vedasi Exchange, ad esempio) o quello di default per alcune soluzioni (vedasi Storage Space Direct, ad esempio).

SwiftStack is a complete, enterprise-ready storage product with OpenStack Swift at the core. SwiftStack delivers needed and innovative functionality outside the datapath, while OpenStack Swift components are in the datapath. The core engine IS OpenStack Swift. It’s not forked, fattened, or watered down.

SwiftStack is one of the lead contributor to the Swift project that has over 220 additional contributors. Swift is used to drive some of the storage clouds at companies like Comcast, Time Warner, and Wikipedia, to name a few.
