Verso Veeam Backup & Replication v9.5

Solo tre mesi fa Veeam ha rilasciato Veeam Backup & Replication v9 in GA e già si parla della prossima versione, che non sarà la 10, bensì la v9.5 (quindi una versione intermedia, ma non per questo meno importante o rilevente).

La settimana scorsa è già stata annunciata la prima nuova feature: una nuova integrazione nativa con un uno storage primario (ossia lo storage che contiene le macchine virtuali) con Nimble Storage! Si affiancherà alle esistenti integrazioni con storage primari di EMC, HP e NetApp (oltre che con la funzione Direct NFS introdotta con la versione 9). Una conferma delle voci che davano finalmente uno storage vendor nuovo, magari meno famoso, ma con ottimi prodotti.

Vari problemi con la scheda vmxnet3

A partire da vSphere 5, VMware raccomanda di usare come network virtual adapter la scheda di rete virtuale vmxnet3, ovviamente partendo da un virtual hardware almeno v7 e solo con sistemi operativi recenti, in pratica da Windows NT 6.0 (Vista o Windows Server 2008) e le varie distribuzioni Linux che includano già il driver della vmxnet3 all’interno del loro kernel.

Tipicamente per questi sistemi operativi la scelta è tra e1000 o vmxnet3: il wizard di creazione di una nuova VM già sceglie quello giusto per le distribuzioni Linux, mentre per i sistemi Windows si limita a proporre la e1000 solo perché il relativo driver è già incluso nell’immagine di installazione di Windows.

La verità è che non c’è una scheda migliore di un’altra, al di là degli aspetti legati alle prestazioni, tipicamente si cerca la massima stabilità e, purtroppo entrambe, hanno avuto vari problemi. Ma con vSphere 5 sembrava che i problemi della e1000 e i vantaggi della vmxnet3 portassero senza troppi dubbi la scelta sulla seconda. Purtroppo con vSphere 6 iniziano ad esservi troppi problemi legati alla vmxnet3.

After the TP4, Microsoft has recently released the new Tecnichal Preview both for System Center 2016 and for Windows Server 2016.

What’s new in System Center 2016 Technical Preview 5:

  • Provides advanced software-defined datacenter support, including managing the lifecycle of Nano Server hosts and virtual machines, simplified deployment of the new Windows Server 2016 software-defined networking components, and support for Storage Spaces Direct and replicated storage volumes.
  • Expands the surface area of monitoring and reduces friction for IT Operations with data-driven alert management that reduces noise and enables faster troubleshooting, scheduling of maintenance windows, increased scale in monitoring of UNIX and Linux servers, and streamlined access to management packs.
  • Enables flexible approaches to Windows management, including in-place upgrade and provisioning packages and profiles, support for new Windows 10 features, a new servicing dashboard and improved mobile device and application management capabilities when connected to Microsoft Intune.

SwiftStack: Object Storage for the Enterprise

SwiftStack is a storage company, founded on 2011 and based in San Francisco, CA, build with the idea to create a large scale object storage infrastructure in customer’s own data center (so specific for private cloud).

Is still a small company with 50 employess and more than 60 customers (half in past 3 quarters), but with interesting names and new deployments in life sciences (Counsyl, OMRF)
and media & entertainment (Rockstar Games, Tata Communications).

Rubrik is a startup that reinvent the backup approach with the idea to eliminate backup software by integrating data protection, instant recovery, and DevOps infrastructure into a single scale-out and converged product!

In the last years they grow really fast from the 4 employees in 2014 to the more than 125 at the beginning of 2016! And from version 1.0 of their product in mid 2015 to the release of Rubrik Converged Data Management 2.0 on August 2015.

Fine del supporto per SQL Server 2005

Il supporto “Extended” per Microsoft SQL Server 2005 è terminato il 12 aprile 2016.

Se dopo il 12 aprile 2016 starai ancora utilizzando SQL Server 2005, non riceverai più gli aggiornamenti di sicurezza. Si consiglia l’aggiornamento a SQL Server 2014, SQL Server 2016 o al database SQL di Azure quanto prima (in accordo alla matrice di compatibilità delle applicazioni che utilizzano il database).
