VMware ha da poco annunciato due importanti novità sui client per vSphere, sia per il vecchio client Windows sia per quello Web:

  • il client legacy basato su C# ed eseguibile solo su sistemi Windows non sarà più disponibile dalla prossima versione di vSphere (finalmente, visto che il cliente era persino più grosso di ESXi). Le versioni 5.5 e 6.0 non saranno affette
  • il cliente web basato su Adobe Flash sarà presto sostituito (finalmente) da un client web totalmente HTML5 (al momento già disponibile come Fling).

Tintri unveils its scale-out storage model

Tintri Inc. has announced a new scale-out storage platform to enable enterprises and cloud service providers (CSPs) to build their own Amazon-like cloud infrastructure for diverse virtualized workloads. The new platform forms the foundation for the industry’s largest all-flash scale-out, with support for up to 160,000 VMs, 10 petabytes of capacity, and 6.4 million IOPS, for less than $1/GB.

VMworld 2016 – Dove e quando

Come annunciato all’ultimo VMworld 2015 US, la location per l’edizione americana del VMworld 2016 quest’anno (e quasi sicuramente anche l’anno prossimo) cambierà da San Francisco a Las Vegas. Rimane invece confermata la location dell’edizione europea, oramai fissa a Barcellona. Queste le date dei due eventi nel 2016:

  • US edition: will be in Las Vegas during August 28 – September 1 (with a partner day on August 28)
  • EU edition: will be in Barcelona during October 17 – 20 (with probably the partner day on 17)

ESXi on HP Proliant G7 or lower

If you are running an HP customized image of ESXi on some old Proliant server, you may have some issues as describe in KB 2094618 (The hp-ams process does not stop when restarting ESXi management agents on HP ProLiant G5, G6 and G7-series servers)

When restarting ESXi management agents on HP ProLiant G5, G6 and G7-series servers running versions of HP Agentless Management Service (AMS) prior to 10.1.0 , you experience these symptoms:

 

  • In the Recent Tasks pane of vCenter Server, you see multiple tasks in the In Progress state
  • Virtual machines that still have a stuck In Progress task are greyed out
  • You are unable to edit the settings on a virtual machine that has a stuck task
  • The host in which the virtual machines reside are running on HP Proliant Gen 5, 6 or 7 hardware
  • When you run the services.sh restart command within the ESXi console, you see this output while stopping the hp-amsservice:Running hp-ams.sh restart

Different editions (and prices) for NSX for vSphere

As promised in the last VMworld, now VMware has introduced two new less-expensive versions of its NSX product targeted for the mid-enterprise. Also on NSX there are now different editions with different prices and, of course, features.

The full version will be the Enterprise one (sigh… on vSphere Enterprise has gone, wasn’t better call it Enterprise Plus), the intermediate Advanced and the starter just Standard. No Essential or Essential Plus, but will be difficult and non sense (yet) apply this kind of technology to the small business.

C’era davvero bisogno della bash su Windows?

In queste settimana c’è stato molto rumore e molto entusiasmo per l’annuncio da parte di Microsoft di includere la bash Linux in Windows 10 a partire dalla prossima  Windows Fast Ring update (14316), almeno per chi partecipa al programma Windows Insider.  Per tutti gli altri bisognerà aspettare il nuovo major upgrade di Windows 10 update: Windows 10 Redstone 1 (aka Anniversary Update).

Questo è stato uno dei primi risultati evidenti della partnership siglata tra Microsoft e Canonical alcuni mesi fa.

Verso Veeam Backup & Replication v9.5

Solo tre mesi fa Veeam ha rilasciato Veeam Backup & Replication v9 in GA e già si parla della prossima versione, che non sarà la 10, bensì la v9.5 (quindi una versione intermedia, ma non per questo meno importante o rilevente).

La settimana scorsa è già stata annunciata la prima nuova feature: una nuova integrazione nativa con un uno storage primario (ossia lo storage che contiene le macchine virtuali) con Nimble Storage! Si affiancherà alle esistenti integrazioni con storage primari di EMC, HP e NetApp (oltre che con la funzione Direct NFS introdotta con la versione 9). Una conferma delle voci che davano finalmente uno storage vendor nuovo, magari meno famoso, ma con ottimi prodotti.
