Add deduplication and compression to an Linux server

Reading Time: 2 minutesAlthough Linux is used in several storage solutions, the native filesystems lack of modern features like deduplication or compression (compression extented attribute is present from some decade, but it’s implementions is still limited or missing). Most storage solutions use other filesystem (like ZFS), or also other operating systems: FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenSolaris branches, or also Windows Server (like DataCore). Now Permabit Technology Corporation announced the availability of its Albireo Virtual Data Optimizer (VDO) for Canonical’s Ubuntu Server.

The Cohesity Data Platform combines a web-scale storage architecture with standards-based hardwar, in the same as there more and more HCI (hyperconverged infrastructure) solutions and platform in the primary storage world.

Reading Time: 4 minutesAlla fine i rumors di questi mesi si sono rivelati fondati: Dell venderà la divisione Dell Software a Francisco Partners e Elliott Management Corporation, due nomi poco conosciuti in Italia, ma abbastanza influenti nella California. Tintri unveils its scale-out storage model

Different editions (and prices) for NSX for vSphere

Reading Time: 2 minutesAs promised in the last VMworld, now VMware has introduced two new less-expensive versions of its NSX product targeted for the mid-enterprise. Also on NSX there are now different editions with different prices and, of course, features. The full version will be the Enterprise one (sigh… on vSphere Enterprise has gone, wasn’t better call it Enterprise Plus), the intermediate Advanced and the starter just Standard. No Essential or Essential Plus, but will be difficult and non sense (yet) apply this kind of technology to the small business.
