Virtual SAN ready nodes

VMware Virtual SAN (or VSAN) is a Software Defined Storage solution from VMware that also fits in the hyper(visor)-converged model. Although is a separate product, the core functions to implement it are already present in the vSphere 5.5 U1 version making really easy to deploy and enable it.

Also the HCL is mainly the same from vSphere 5.5, but some requirements and special considerations must be considered before implementing a VSAN solution.

You can start from the scracth buy scratch your hyper-converged architecture, or you can directly bought a Virtual SAN ready nodes (minimum 3 for start).

VMware vCenter Virtual Appliance issues

Starting from vSphere 5.0, the vCenter Server Virtual Appliance (vCSA) is a new deployment options with some pros and cons. Some of the cons may limit it in the large environments, but starting with the version 5.5 the embedded database has more interesting limits to make it suitable for most of the SMB cases.

Honestly I like the idea to have a vCenter Server as a single black box: it make simple to manage and backup it. But also to update (update vCSA is really faster compared to update a tradition vCenter Server).

Anyway there are also some minor issue that you have to take care during your deployments.

VMworld 2014

Esattamente come successo con il VMworld 2013, anche quest’anno l’evento VMworld 2014 si svolgerà a San Francisco (per l’edizione americana) e Barcellona (per l’evento europeo).

  • VMworld US: sarà a San Francisco nel periodo 24-28 agosto 2014 (with a partner day on 24)
  • VMworld EU: sarà a Barcellona nel periodo 14-16 ottobre 2014 (with a partner day on 13)

La registrazione per l’evento americano è già aperta (con lo sconto early bid che scade il 10 giugno). La registrazione per l’evento europeo invece aprirà nelle prossime settimane (con lo sconto early bid che scadrà il 29 luglio). I prezzi sono in linea con quelli precedenti (per maggiori informazioni consultate la pagina per l’evento americano o quello europeo).

Book review: VMware Horizon Workspace Essentials

I’ve got the opportunity to read one of the few book about the Horizon Workspace solution: VMware Horizon Workspace Essentials from Peter von Oven, Peter Bjork and Joel Lindberg.

This book came from a different editor, compared to most of the VMware related books (from VMware Press) that is Packt Publishing and has several interesting books (really a lot on virtualization and still growing).

As written this is one of the few resources (or the only one?) about VMware Horizon Workspace that is a really interesting product, but with not so much labs, course and material compared with other products.

Dopo l’annuncio di qualche mese fa, VMware ha da poco rilasciato Horizon View 6 in general availability (GA). Anche il nome ora è leggermente modificato in VMware Horizon (with View) 6.0, probabilmente anche in considerazione del fatto che la Horizon Suite non è più disponibile.

Pure le edizioni sono cambiate nel nome: Horizon 6 (with View) viene venduto in 3 edizioni chiamate VMware Horizon™ View™ Standard Edition, VMware Horizon™ Advanced Edition e VMware Horizon™ Enterprise Edition.

Report della Server Infrastructure Days 2014

Si è conclusa l’edizione 2014 del Server Infrastructure Days (SID), l’evento organizzato dalla community WindowServer.it in collaborazione con Microsoft Italia, dedicato alle tecnologie server di Microsoft.

L’evento si è svolto il , presso il Microsoft Italia, ed esattamente come successo l’anno scorso si è caratterizzato da una grande partecipazione (già normalmente difficile per un evento di un giorno, figuriamoci per un evento di due giorni), molto interesse, ottimi sponsor ed il tutto spiegato da speaker di alto livello.

SanDisk is trying to buy Fusion-IO

Chipmaker SanDisk Corp said it would buy the well know flash storage device maker Fusion-io Inc for about $1.1 billion.

With this move SanDisk can doubled down on its strategy to target the enterprise and data centers, considering that Fusion-io is already used in the enterprise, with really big customers like Apple and Facebook.

SanDisk is probably know more for the consumers products (lot of flash memory card are from this vendor), but has several interesting products also for the enterprise (see this post about their caching product).
