Simplify VMware’s products update/upgrade

Managing the lifecycle of a complete software stack it’s something potentially complex because to the interdependence between the different layers, the order of the update or upgrade and the multiple software piecies (but also potentially some firmware/driver updates).

For VMware vSphere there is VUM that can simplify ESXi lifecycle, but for example cannot manage the vCenter/PSC upgrade/update process.

For VMware vSAN, VUM has been improved to consider the proper flow of the update process.

VMware Horizon Client update

VMware Horizon Client communicates with the View server, which acts as a broker between the client device and remote desktops and published applications.

You enter credentials into Horizon Client, the server authenticates your credentials, and then the server finds the remote desktops and published applications that you are entitled to use.

Also if you can use VMware Blast to access your virtual desktop or published applications, a client is usually preferrable to have full features.

New Nutanix certifications

The historycal technical certification from Nutanix was the Nutanix Platform Professional (NPP) certification: a free online exam to all Nutanix customers and partners wwhere training is recommended, but not required before attempting the exam.

The exam was quite easy (due also the fact that it’s an online and not proctored exam), so the value of this type of certification was not so high.

But was a requirement for Nutanix partners and and plus for a customer because it confirms your (minimal) ability to install, configure, and manage the Nutanix environment.

Nutanix AOS 5.8

Nutanix has recently released a new version of Acropolis Operating System (AOS): AOS 5.8 is now the latest version. Just few months after Nutanix AOS 5.6.

NOTICE: AOS 5.8 is a new AOS Feature Release or Short term Support (STS) Release, that means it isn’t a Long Term Supported (LTS). The support for all feature release version will only be for 6 months after the release date, within which period you will have to upgrade to the next feature release version.

Pianificare un backup con VeeamZIP

Uno dei limiti di VeeamZIP (la versione gratuita di Veeam Backup & Replication) è l’impossibilità di pianificare dei job di backup.

A dire il vero c’è anche il limite significativo che ogni VeeamZIP è sempre un backup full, sia lato sorgente che destinazione, ma questo limite potrebbe essere minimale per realtà molto piccole, dove lo spazio in gioco è poco.

Per ovviare il limite della pianificazione automatica, da un po’ di tempo è possibile ricorrere a script in PowerShell che automatizzino la creazione di un VeeamZip, usando poi il pianificatore di Windows come strumento di automazione e ripetizione automatica dei backup.

Veeam Backup & Replication aggiunge il supporto a vSphere 6.7

VMware vSphere 6.7 non era ancora ufficialmente supportato da Veeam Backup & Replication, come pure non lo era vSphere 6.5 Update 2 (a causa del backport dalla versione 6.7).

Ma ora Veeam ha rilasciato un nuovo update di  Veeam Backup Replication 9.5 Update 3a che supporta tutte le versioni recenti di VMware:

VMware Workstation Pro 14 non funziona con CPU vecchie

VMware Workstation 14 sarà anche un grande prodotto ed è molto comodo per chi lavora in ambiente VMware (e non). Inoltre la versione 14 ha portato diverse funzionalità di ESXi 6.5 e 6.7 (come ad esempio il supporto per dispositivi NVMe). Ma purtroppo ha anche reso alcune (troppe) CPU obsolete e incompatibili con questa versione.

Il che non è proprio positivo visto che spesso viene usato come ambiente di test o sviluppo anche su portatili di qualche anno fa.

Nel caso abbiate un processore non supportato, riuscirete lo stesso a creare le VM, riconfigurarle, spostarle, … ma non potrete mai accenderle.
