Lo strumento VMware vCenter Standalone Converter in linea di massima viaggia in parallelo alle versioni di VMware vSphere e quindi se volete convertire verso vSphere 6.0, allora avrete bisogno del Converter 6.0 (o di uno successivo). E normalmente una versione recente del Converter supporta i vari vSphere precedenti.
Però per i sistemi operativi guest (ossia delle macchine da convertire) il discorso è più complicato, perché è sì vero che una nuova versione aggiunge i nuovi sistemi operativi, ma è anche vero che rimuove il supporto ai sistemi operativi obsoleti (quelli dichiarati fuori supporto da parte del relativo vendor).
Quindi se avete sistemi vecchi da convertire (e in Italia ho visto ancora dei Windows NT 4 in uso!) vi servirà una versione precedente del Converter che però potrebbe non essere in grado di scrivere direttamente sul vostro vSphere. Qua basta passare da un formato Workstation/Fusion/Player intermedio e poi usare un Converter più recente (oppure salvare già i file con vmdk non sparsi, in modo che siano poi registrabili sul vostro vCenter). Questa tabella sintetizza i vari sistemi operativi supportati (non vuol dire che quelli non supportati non possano essere convertiti) dalle varie versioni del Converter di VMware:
