Some vExpert views on Hyper-Convergence approach

Altaro (a company with an interesting backup solution both for VMware and Hyper-V) has recently published a short interview with 9 vExpert on their views on VMware VSAN and Hyper-Convergence solutions.

Hyper-Convergence is the concept of putting storage and compute within the same chassis, with the idea that scale-out storage and computing will be much simpler. There are many companies that are starting to delve into this space, such as VMware with VSAN, Nutanix (one of the pioneer of this kind of approach), and now also Microsoft with Storage Spaces Direct.

Petizione per avere un Microsoft Ignite in Europa

Microsoft TechEd era il grande evento annuale rivolto a programmatori e professionisti IT interessati nelle tecnologie Microsoft. La prima edizione del TechEd è avvenuta nel lontano 1993 ad Orlando, in Florida e l’ultima è stata quella di Barcellona 2014. Da allora il TechEd è cambiato e non è più tornato in Europa.

A partire dal 2015, Microsoft ha cambiato il nome di questo evento in Microsoft Ignite. Il promo Ignite è stato nel 2015 a Chicago ed il prossimo sarà ad Atlanta, previsto per il 26–30 settembre, 2016. Ci sarà aspettarsi molte novità da questo evento e forse il fatto che è stato spostato dalla primavera all’autunno è anche legato all’uscita di Windows Server 2016 e tutta la nuova wave.

Previsioni per il 2016

Le vacanze sono finalmente giunte e un nuovo anno (bisestile per chi è scaramantico) si sta avvicinando. Questo è il momento nel quale, oltre ai vari auguri ed analisi dell’anno in corso, si vedono fioccare anche tante previsioni sul prossimo anno.

Penso sia ovvio che nell’IT, per la velocità con cui si muove ed evolve, sia alquanto difficile fare previsioni non banali che poi si rivelino fondate. Si potrebbero citare tante previsioni fallimentari, come ad esempio la morte dei PC a favore dei tablet. A lungo termine diventa poi utopistico e solo pochi visionari hanno centrato le loro previsioni (in mezzo a tante altre previsioni poi non verificatesi).

Come già scritto vari anni fa, non amo fare previsioni per il nuovo anno e al limite riporto previsioni interessanti sviluppate da terzi. Il 2016 sarà comunque un anno interessante per la virtualizzazione (che nel 2015 di fatto è stata utilizzata, ma ignorata come argomento a sé stante, a parte forse l’annuncio dell’hypervisor di Nutanix), dato che sicuramente vi sarà l’uscita di Windows Server 2016 e probabilmente (la beta è già in fase avanzata) della nuova versione di VMware vSphere.

More storage consolidation: NetApp acquire SolidFire

NetApp, a well know storage company (the pioneer in file based storage offer), has announced a definitive agreement to acquire SolidFire for $870 million in cash. SolidFire maybe need more presentation: founded in 2010, has interesting  all-flash storage systems built for the next-generation data center where simple scaling, set-and-forget management, assured performance and multi-tenancy, and cloud economic models are driving new market growth.

Minio cloud storage

Minio is a new company build around an Open Source cloud storage product, built by veterans from Gluster.

Gluster is a distributed filesystem was purchased by Red Hat in 2011 for $136 million to use it as a base of their SDS vision, like with the Red Hat Storage Server. Minio co-founder and CEO, Anand Babu Periasamy, was CTO at Gluster, Inc and other people from the Gluster team moved in Minio. Six months ago, Minio lands $3.3M seed round from venture capitalists.

LiveAction is a company founded on 2007 (with the name of ActionPacked) with the corporate office at Santa Clara, CA, the engineering iffice at Honolulu and several sales offices (San Francisco, San Diego, Austin, Chicago, New York, Charlotte, Louisville, Birmingham). More than 50 employees, 1000 users and more than 40 partners.

Their product is an Intelligent WAN (IWAN) Visibility and Assurance, a software designed to simplify network management. DataCore annuncia il supporto ai Virtual Volumes

DataCore ha annunciato un Universal VVols Support all’interno delle loro soluzioni di storage, completando quanto già iniziato anni fa per avere un’integrazione sempre maggiore con VMware vSphere.

Come molti sapranno, DataCore ha una soluzione di virtualizzazione dello storage (chiamata anche “storage hypervisor”) che gestisce storage esistenti (anche in configurazione DAS) per fornire servizi di storage di alto livello e, ovviamente, funzioni di protezione dei dati.
